RECRUITING INSTRUCTIONS

Before we get into what you need for your knight, there are a few important points to keep in mind.

Keep these rules in mind while creating your knight, and dont expect anything special.

Steps to follow when recruiting:

1. First thing, you need a name. Give us a first name and a last name. The name must be something clever. Long ago, we accepted a "Blip" and a "Lepreux Messie", but we won't do so again. We discourage using your own name, unless it's awesome, but we won't stop you if that's your thing. We like exotic names like Myris Phare and Kulara Karfa, but as long as it's not something like "Ogopogo Isback" we'll let you do whatever.

Some names that have already been accepted and canonized: Atheme Tethen, Abaddon Daemon, Leprue Messe, Kinguin Peet, Aveni Leman Fresar Landes, Myris Phare, Cildar Emle, Kulara Karfa, Cyprus Galahe, Shasta D'argail, Zynex Traval, Karice Contel, Lathria Greilat, Galbion Antaries, Fujio Kosumo, Apollina Kosumo, Cedric Vincar, Relm Sarin, Calvin Darmani, and Kalema Dijar.

2. Choose which division of the knighthood you want to be in. These are the divisions you can choose from.

The Military. Supreme officer: General Kulara Karfa.
The military functions as the Knighthood's border defense and offensive force, primarily. They are dedicated to protecting the values of the church, and keeping the lives of the civilians of the Knighthood peaceful and happy. Knights spend most of their daily lives in rigorous training, under Kulara Karfa, while family time or social lives must wait until evenings. Life as a Knight is difficult, dangerous, and not for the faint of heart. As the Military is almost constantly in war with one nation or another trying to perserve the Onion Knight lands, Knights often wind up dead on the battlefield.

The Arcanum. Supreme Officer: Lord Herald Michean Kassil.
The Arcanum is the branch of the Knighthood immersed in the studies of magic, ether currents and rune structures. They are masters of Heraldry, the magic of the land. The Arcanum makes invaluable contributions to the Knighthood such as the breeding and rearing of the Peists, weather manipulation, and city lighting at night. Of all the factions, the Arcanum is the most lax in forming a regime for the daily activities of its members, however, only the most studious and dedicated of mages can ever hope to gain recognition and achievement among the Arcanum's vast student body. This is also the divison War Mages, those who study offensive battle Heraldry, belong to.

The Church. Supreme Officer: Regent Daraun Shiresta.
The Church is the very heart and soul of the Knighthood. It is the ideas and morals of the Church that the Knights fight to protect. The Church is dedicated firstly to the preservation and betterment of the lives of its civilians. The members of the Church must spend a certain number of hours each day in active duty on Church grounds to aid the sick or wounded and assist with maintenance duties. All Church members are taught white magic, both offensive and defensive. The Knighthood's home defense and peacekeepers, the Templars, are also part of this division.

If you like, you may also opt for a position as either a civilian or a government official, though your precise position will be pending.

3. Choose a position within your faction.

These are the available positions within the Military:

  • Cavalry: These soldiers are usually mounted on peists, large dragonesqe creatures that function equivalent to horses. The Cavalry is the backbone of the army. They are effective soldiers, fighting with sword and shield. The Cavalry may eventually make it to become Dragoons, the ultimate fighters in the knighthood, for they are generally the only Military flexible enough to be considered worthy. They choose to focus solely on their battle abilities, and shun magic, except some battle related grey magic. They are often paired with war mages. The Cavalry member will protect the war mage while he's spell-slinging, as well as wreaking havoc on his own.
    • Sample Weapons:
      • Murasame Sword
      • Murakumo Sword
      • Lance
  • Archers: Archers are fast, lethal, and efficient. They wear almost no armor, and try to stay out of enemy range, using longbows to harass enemies safely. However, they are trained well enough to be devastating even at close range. When archers run out of arrows, they draw forth lethal katanas and move into the thick of the battle, relying on their speed and reflexes. Most archers eventually become priests, in their later years, for archers have to be young, quick, and focused.
    • Sample Weapons:
      • Long Bow
      • Muramasa Sword
      • Knives
  • Infantry: The Infantrymen are the brute force of the armies. They can be either Heavy or Light, depending on their armor and speed. This is a core of well-armed men and women traveling on foot. The infantry is the most heavily populated sector of the Military. Infantryman have excellent strength and experience, wear armor, and fight with high quality weapons. This is the class with the most variety when it comes to weapons. They can use axes, maces, morning stars, gauntlets, and other weapons if appropriate. Infantry men often know some grey magic, to enhance their combat abilities. Grey magic grants enhanced physical powers; mild boosts to strength, endurance, defense and eventually a barrier which prevents some magic damage. In time, the magic barrier actually becomes strong enough to block enemy spells completely.
    • Sample Weapons:
      • Murasame Sword
      • Murakumo Sword
      • Pretty much anything else

The Arcanum is divided as such:

  • Heralds: Most mages in the Arcanum serve as Heralds. They study rune structures, Rune Magic, ether currents, demonology, and any other things that fall within the realm of the supernatural. Heralds spend a good deal of their time isolated deep within the Tower of Halariu, studying in order to further their knowledge and power. They have many responsibilities around the city, particularly maintaining the many rune structures throught the city. The Heralds of the Arcanum are pacifists, and take an oath to not kill people, except in extreme cases of self-defense.
    • Sample Weapons:
      • Staff
  • War Mages: War Mages are those who study black, or offensive, magic. The wear little armor during battle, so their movement isn't restricted. They are often paired with Cavalry, both for the added defense and the swift transportation of the peists. Trying to focus spells while on a moving mount, though, is highly difficult, so they usually go to ground when they need to cast spells. At some point, they will either run out of spells, or be forced into direct combat, so war mages are all trained in sword fighting. They use the Muramasa, an enchanted katana, which is smaller, quicker, and easiliy balanced for a mage. The Muramasa can also be used to weaken or deflect some enemy spells. The devastation caused by a high-level war mage is immense, and they are truly a force to be feared. Black magic is focused around elemental attacks; elements include and ARE limited to: Fire, Lightning, Ice, and Shadow. Shadow magic is only accessible by high-level mages.
    • Sample Weapons:
      • Muramasa
      • Dagger
      • Staff
The Church is divided as such:
  • Priests: Priests maintain the foundation upon which the army was built, the church. Priests are caretakers of the entire country. The church has established many hospitals and schools, all of which are staffed by priests. They are mostly renowned for their mastery of white magic, which is primarily healing magic. It allows you to heal your own wounds or the wounds of others. Priests are also trained in offensive magics, just to be well-rounded, and gain access to a 5th element, often called HOLY. In the hands of a skilled white mage, HOLY magic can be far more devastating than even the most powerful black magics. In addition, are field priests, called Medics. Medics are essential to the army, attempting to heal the wounded on the battlefield before they become beyond help. They stabilize the wounded, then move them to a safer location. Medics are not trained in combat arts.
    • Sample Weapons:
      • None
  • Templars: Templars are the only fighters who serve under the Church directly. They are the Knighthood's home defense, in case there is an attack on the city. The are also the city's peace-keepers, patrolling the streets and keeping the citizens safe. Templars never leave the city to participate in wars, unless they also have a position in the Military. They are a particularly elite group of warriors, skillful and well trained. Combining the healing and offensive powers of White magic with the power enhancing grey magic and their already extraordinary fighting abilities, Templars are devastating warriors. Paladins are often considered to be the best warriors in the Knighthood.
    • Sample Weapons:
      • Murasame
      • Murakumo
      • Pretty much anything else

4. Choose an House to align yourself with. These are typical characteristics of people in each House, but by no means can this encompass everyone in that House.

Lurin:
Honest, kind, pure, and just. Lurin are noble people, possesing a strong sense of justice, but showing great kindness to everyone. They have strong beliefs and an unshakable dedication to them. Their integrity is incredibly important to them, and they will go to great lengths to maintain it. Lurin sometimes come off harsh and very strict.

Saelen:
Wise, loyal, passionate, and visionaries. Saelen are the people who drive the Knighthood forward. They are never content to leave things as they are, and always look for new and better ways to do things. They have an impressive devotion to almost any cause the work for, and any people they consider friends. Saelen often seem to have their heads in the clouds, and have a habit of trying to fix what isn't broken.

Aithr:
Honorable, disciplined, merciful, dutiful. Aithr are the people most concerned with the self. They are incredibly disciplined, and strive to excel in everything they do. They have a strong sense of duty, and will do any task they are given to the best of their abilities. They will never go back on their word. Aithr sometimes come off as impersonal and unconcerned with what's happening around them.

5. Finally, character concept.

Think up a description for your character. Yes, that's right, a description. Start with a physical description. How tall? Hair color? Slim build or heavy-set? Any particular distinguishing features? Physical description is important, in case Myris decides to draw your character. The more information you give us, the better drawing we can get, and the closer to your concept it will be. Keep in mind that your character has to be human. No elves, dwarves, cat-people, or other bizzarities of un-nature. Similarly, your character's hair must be an actual hair color. No blue, no silver, no green, no pink. We will accept any shade of red, blond, brown, black or grey you want to use.

More important is personality. Make your knight a real person. And nothing like "coolest fighting guy ever". That's simply unacceptable. Give him a type of personality, such as jovial, or serious, and preferably a character flaw. A bio is also good to have, so figure out your knight's background, family, why he joined the Knighthood, etc.

We are looking for good, well thought character descriptions. Remember those rules up at the top? Well, the better your description, the more of them we'll ignore. So if you want to be a high-ranking Child of Cain, and write a very good, detailed, thought-out character description, with background, we'll probably let you be one. However "dark lone wolf ninja assassin who was a former Cainite" is not acceptable. You won't get anything that way. We're talking something like our Camarilla bios here.

If we like your character description enough, it is possible that we will incorporate your character into a bit part in one of our novels. It's way to late to be in "The Great Onion Knighthood", but there are going to more novels after this, and we will need characters. Crappy character designs will be discarded, acceptible ones will be posted on the website's roster, and excellent, well thought out, well balanced, realistic ones will be catalogued for characters in the novel. No greater honor in Onion Knighthood can be obtained.

You've read the Recruitment rules, now go build your Knight here!

If you want to see what a good bio should be like, see the Official Roster. These are people who signed the roster, that we deemed good enough to be included on our site, and used in one of our books. Lathria was one we liked so much, we made her a Military Councilor. She now plays an important role in the story. Your character could too, if you do a good job.

Inevitable Disclaimer: This is important, so listen up. By signing the roster, you are giving us permission to use your character names and concepts in our novel, and on our site, in anyway we please. So if you don't mind us taking 'artistic liberties' with these guys, sign ahead! But if your character has blue hair, and we decided to use him or her, don't come complaining when we change it to brown. Whether or not you follow the recruitment rules when signing, we follow them when selecting characters. Don't say I didn't warn you.
